Naomi Steinberg Ph.D Psychologist

I am a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst and have been in private practice for 34 years. I completed my Ph.D. at Penn State University, along with a pre-doctoral internship at the University of Oregon Counseling Center and a post-doctoral residency at the former Dammasch State Hospital.

I completed a 4-year certification program in psychoanalysis at the Northwest Center for Psychoanalysis–Portland in 2006. I work with adults and couples in both brief and longer-term psychotherapy.

Addressing mental health needs is an important part of building a balanced and fulfilling life. Dr. Steinberg, focuses on creating a safe and supportive environment where individuals can explore their thoughts, emotions, and personal challenges in a meaningful and thoughtful way.

Taking the step to begin therapy can feel significant. It often comes at a time when something in life feels uncertain, overwhelming, or in need of deeper understanding. Therapy offers a space to slow down, reflect, and begin to make sense of these experiences with the support of a trained and attentive professional.

Through a combination of clinical knowledge and compassionate guidance, clients are encouraged to explore their experiences more fully. This process supports the development of healthier perspectives, increased emotional awareness, and a greater sense of clarity over time.

A Thoughtful Approach to Emotional Well-Being

Emotional well-being often requires more than simply addressing surface-level concerns. While immediate challenges are important, psychotherapy creates an opportunity to look more deeply at the patterns and experiences that shape how i think, feel, and relate to others.

Many individuals find that certain struggles repeat themselves over time, sometimes without a clear understanding of why. Therapy provides a space to explore these patterns with curiosity and care. By developing a deeper awareness of emotional responses and internal experiences, it becomes possible to approach difficulties in a more grounded and intentional way.

Personal growth is a gradual and evolving process. It often involves developing patience, self-reflection, and a willingness to engage with experiences that may not always be easy to face.

With consistent support, individuals can begin to recognize meaningful connections between past and present experiences. Through therapeutic conversations—and by paying attention to the dynamics that emerge within the therapeutic relationship itself—clients can gain valuable insight into how they relate to themselves and others. This deeper understanding often leads to new ways of responding to challenges and navigating life with greater confidence and clarity.

How I Work

Dr. Steinberg works with individuals and couples who are ready to move beyond surface-level concerns and explore the deeper dynamics shaping their emotional lives and relationships. Many people find themselves repeating the same patterns—miscommunication, emotional distance, or unresolved conflict—without fully understanding what’s driving them.

While quick fixes or temporary compromises may offer short-term relief, they don’t always create lasting change. Through thoughtful and in-depth therapeutic work, Dr. Steinberg helps clients gain greater insight, develop healthier patterns, and move toward more meaningful and lasting change.

Dr. Steinberg creates a safe and supportive space where both partners can feel heard and understood. She gently explores the underlying emotions, unmet needs, and communication patterns that may be creating tension or disconnection. By bringing awareness to these deeper layers, couples can begin to respond to each other with greater clarity, empathy, and understanding.

Individualized and Supportive Care

Dr. Steinberg offers psychotherapy that is centered on understanding each individual’s unique experiences, concerns, and personal goals. Therapy is not a one-size-fits-all process; rather, it is shaped by the specific needs and preferences of each person.

Some individuals may benefit from a more structured and goal-oriented approach, while others may prefer a quieter, more open space for reflection. This flexibility allows therapy to adapt in a way that feels most supportive and effective.

Creating a strong therapeutic relationship is an essential part of this work. Feeling understood, respected, and supported provides the foundation for deeper exploration. Over time, this relationship can help individuals feel more comfortable engaging with difficult emotions, exploring complex experiences, and developing new perspectives.

Through thoughtful guidance, clients are supported in building emotional strength, increasing self-awareness, and developing healthier ways of thinking, communicating, and responding to life’s challenges.

Supporting Long-Term Growth and Well-Being

Mental health care today brings together modern psychological understanding with genuine empathy and respect for each individual’s story. Dr. Steinberg is is committed to offering a therapeutic space that supports both immediate concerns and long-term personal growth.

While therapy can help address specific challenges, it also provides an opportunity for deeper and more lasting change. Over time, individuals often develop a stronger sense of self, improved emotional balance, and a greater ability to navigate relationships and life transitions.

The goal is not simply to resolve difficulties, but to foster a more meaningful connection to oneself and to life as a whole. This process can lead to increased confidence, clearer decision-making, and a more grounded sense of well-being in both personal and professional life.

Therapy is a collaborative and ongoing process—one that evolves over time and supports individuals in moving toward a more fulfilling and authentic way of living.
