About Me

Naomi Steinberg, Ph.D.

I am a licensed psychologist and psychoanalyst and have been in private practice for 34 years. I completed my Ph.D. at Penn State University, along with a pre-doctoral internship at the University of Oregon Counseling Center and a post-doctoral residency at the former Dammasch State Hospital.

I completed a 4-year certification program in psychoanalysis at the Northwest Center for Psychoanalysis–Portland in 2006.

I work with adults and couples in both brief and longer-term psychotherapy. In addition to providing psychotherapy, I also provide consultation to other mental health professionals. I have a strong interest in psychoanalytic writing.

My Approach to Therapy

I encourage clients to notice particular thoughts, feelings, images, or even bodily sensations that occur in their daily lives, as well as images and feelings that appear in dreams.

I encounter connections to past experiences in one’s family of origin, but I prefer to begin with present-day experience and work from there. The idea is that unresolved issues from the past live on inside of me, making them part of our present experience.

How I Work

Dr. Steinberg works with individuals and couples who are ready to move beyond surface-level concerns and explore the deeper dynamics shaping their emotional lives and relationships. Many people find themselves repeating the same patterns—miscommunication, emotional distance, or unresolved conflict—without fully understanding what’s driving them.

While quick fixes or temporary compromises may offer short-term relief, they don’t always create lasting change. Through thoughtful and in-depth therapeutic work, Dr. Steinberg helps clients gain greater insight, develop healthier patterns, and move toward more meaningful and lasting change.

Dr. Steinberg creates a safe and supportive space where both partners can feel heard and understood. She gently explores the underlying emotions, unmet needs, and communication patterns that may be creating tension or disconnection. By bringing awareness to these deeper layers, couples can begin to respond to each other with greater clarity, empathy, and understanding.

Start with a Conversation

Sometimes it helps to have a place where you can slow down and speak freely.I offer a calm and thoughtful space where i can explore.

01

A Thoughtful Place to Begin

Starting can feel difficult. I offer a quiet, respectful space where you can talk openly and begin to make sense of things in your own time.

02

When Things Feel Heavy

If you’ve been carrying a lot on your own, it can help to talk. I offer a space where you can share openly and feel heard without judgment.

03

Begin Wherever You Are

You don’t need to prepare or organize your thoughts. You can start exactly where you are, and I’ll take it one step at a time, together.

04

Exploring Thoughts & Experiences

I encourage clients to notice particular thoughts, feelings, images, or even bodily sensations that occur in their daily lives, as well as images and feelings that appear in dreams.

I encounter connections to past experiences in one’s family of origin, but I prefer to begin with present-day experience and work from there. The idea is that unresolved issues from the past live on inside of me, making them part of our present experience.

The Therapy Relationship

Often, these unresolved issues present themselves as struggles or dynamics within the therapeutic relationship. In that sense, I have a valuable opportunity to address these concerns in the here and now of the therapy process.

Values & What to Expect

I believe that it is of utmost importance to address emotional experience in an honest and courageous way. I also highly value patience, empathy for self, and curiosity.

At times, these qualities can be difficult to access, and I can work together in therapy to develop them. While the therapy process can take time, I am also in favor of addressing practical concerns as they arise and providing clear feedback as the process unfolds.
